Snow Chain Tips & FAQ

NSW: All 2wd vehicles must carry snow-chains, Awd & 4×4’s do not have to legally carry snow-chains. However, it is still recommended to do so.

VIC: All vehicles heading to the snow in Vic must carrying snow-chains.

Mt Hotham: Mt Hotham is in Victoria so all vehicles must carry snow-chains. Furthermore these chains must be diamond pattern.

No matter how good you think that your car’s traction system is, it is no good if you haven’t got any grip. That is why understanding the tyres you are driving on helps you understand why chains are so important. Also many car manufacturers actually tell you to turn your traction control off when in snowy conditions.

One of the greatest problems for a motorist driving on an alpine road in winter is the unsuitability of their car in its standard form for driving in ice and snow conditions.

For most vehicles the same standard “summer” tyres are used all year round. These tyres are designed for hot, fast driving. In cold, slow alpine conditions these tyres do not have the physical properties to provide traction. Whilst snow chains can provide extra traction and control, best practice is to fit “winter” tyres to your vehicle. Therefore, many imported car manufacturers recommend the use of “winter” tyres on snowy and icy roads.

Winter tyres can be distinguished from other tyres, including snow and mud tyres, as they are marked with a standard logo showing a snow flake and a mountain. These can be bought from specialist tyre sellers.

A potential drawback with using winter tyres is that their soft compound results in a greater rate of wear when used on normal roads than all-season tyres, especially in warmer weather. If using winter tyres, particular care is
required to ensure they have not been worn to such an extent that their performance on snowbound roads is affected.

For most of us though a second set of tyres is not practical. Therefore the following must be understood by alldrivers when driving in the alps;

  • With any tyre the greater the tread wear, the less safe the tyres are in winter alpine conditions. A worn tyre may be legal to use, but it has a greatly reduced safety margin;
  • High speed (V and Z) rated, wide, low profile summer tyres are not suitable. Whilst fitting chains will help, for some vehicles it is not possible to do so. This is normally the case as the tyre and rim combination does not give enough suspension clearance.
  • M&S are not snow tyres. M&S is branding for “all season” tyres however unfortunately the variations on tyre patterns labelled with M&S is far too great to guarantee good performance in snow and ice.

How to read tyre size guide

First step is always to consult the vehicles owners hand book. In here it will advise whether they permit snow chains to be used as well as which wheels to put the chains on.

Then you will need to know the tyre’s width, aspect ratio and rim size.

“If tyres are your car’s feet, then snow chains are the shoes” This analogy works in two ways;

1 – You always try shoes on before buying them to get just the right size.

2 – A shoe that is slightly too big or small can be made to “sort of” fit by loosening or tightening the laces. But if the fit isn’t close enough then you will end up with trouble.

Generally this is question of how much clearance there is around the wheel.

If the clearance appears to be ok…

It is true that one of the main problems we encounter is the increasing number of vehicles listed unable to fit chains. To assist our clients get the best outcome we are happy to discuss your options and are proud to offer a free fitting service. There are always a number of variables that influence an end decision. To determine your cars suitability for snow chains we;

  1. Refer to the owner’s manual or vehicle dealer for warranted rim and tyre combinations.
  2. Assess the clearance between the inner part of the tyre and the suspension and or steering components rather than the clearance between the tyre and the body or the tyre and the mudguard.
  3. Need to know the rim / tyre combination on your car.
  4. Test fit chains to ensure suitable clearance
